IOGKF AUSTRALIA DEMONSTRATES AT WNBL BASKETBALL GAME:
GOULBURN, NSW, AUSTRALIA -
On Saturday September 12, 2009, I was invited by the Goulburn Basketball association to perform a traditional Karate demonstration as part of the half time entertainment for a WNBL game to be held in Goulburn, NSW.
The Game was played between the Sydney Uni Flames and the Canberra Capitals – a team that includes 6 current world champions!
Due to the scale of this event and the pending demonstration, I invited IOGKF Australian joint Chief Instructor, Sensei Joe Roses to participate in the event. Not only did Sensei Roses agree to partake and support me, but he asked any members from IOGKF Canberra who were interested to attend.
I was really surprised to when we had 13 seniors arrive at my dojo on Saturday afternoon and it was great to see everyone preparing themselves with their specific training methods.
After I had a quick drink and a catch up with Sensei Joe, Michael Scott and Tom L’shael in my home, we proceeded to the dojo work out the finer points of the demonstration. I was very impressed with everyone’s passion and commitment to get their contribution to the demonstration as perfect as they could.
Although this demonstration was quite an important one with people from Sydney, Canberra, Goulburn and surrounds watching, our goal of showing the public that Karate is for everyone – old or young, male or female – never changed.
We all arrived at the Goulburn Basketball Stadium around 6pm, where we were greeted by 13 of my students, who performed a large group Gekisai Dai Ichi demonstration on the night.
The demonstration took place with great success! There were demonstrations of Sanchin by Rob DeCastella, Bill Giles and I with Shime from Sensei Roses. Gekisai Dai Ichi and two man Kata group demonstrations for many of our females members, who are of extremely high standard.
With time slipping away and our demonstration cut short, mine and Sensei Roses’ demonstrations had to be performed at the same time! Although this might sound strange, the crowd absolutely loved it! I performed Yakusoku Kumite with Tom L’shael and Sensei Roses performed Kakie and Knife attacks with Bill Giles and Michael Scott.
I have received a lot of positive feedback and comments from this event and hope we can demonstrate at other large scale games in others cities soon!
I would like to thank my official sponsors who aided me in this event:
- GOULBURN FURNITURE WAREHOUSE
- GIDDINGS FORMAL HIRE
- Jason’s Barber Shop
- Goulburn Lawn Service
- Ganter Constructions
My eternal thanks go to all participants of this demonstration, but I would like to pay a particular mention to Sensei Joe Roses and all the members who traveled down from Canberra to support me and this demonstration. Because of the time shortening many of you were not able to perform, but you showed no disappointment only happiness and encouragement and for that I thank you. You posses the true Budo spirit of the Karate-ka.
I would also like to thank Tom L’Shael for being my demonstration partner with no complaints and only enthusiasm!

Mulwaree High School 5th annual International Food Night
Special thanks to Mr. Coll, Mr. Wardle and Mr. Lieskie for allowing the IOGKF to demonstrate at this magnificent event. Thanks also to Mr. Morgan Bye for his organisational efforts. To Mr. Phil Gann for his transportation of all the training equipment, and to Mr. Brett Hill for his organisational support on the evening.
On March 13th 2009, Mulwaree High School held its 5th annual International Food Night, to much success and a great reception. Over 1000 people turned up to sample the fine foods and entertainment on offer.
As part of the evenings performance, the dojo took 6 members from the boys class to demonstrate traditional Karate and its training methods to a very large crowd.
The demonstration started with a group Gekisai Dai Ichi Kata performance by all the young boys. This was followed by Suparimpei being performed by Sensei Lambert, while the rest of the demo squad demonstrated Hojo Undo, Kakie and San Dan Gi.
Once this was completed the young boys took it in turns demonstrating Yakusoku Kumite drills, much to the pleasure of the crowd. This was followed by a rock pounding demonstration from Sensei Lambert, again to which the crowd was very impressed.
After that, the boys broke off into partners to demonstrate Iri Kumi, while Sensei Lambert demonstrated some Chishi Variations, followed by some Yakusoku Kumite.
The crowd enjoyed all the entertainment on the night and many positive comments were received about the demonstration and a large number of dojo flyers were taken.
Some of the comments received included:
- "The whole demo was great! The young boys were excellent."
- "The boys were like soilders. They were that focused, it was like only their teacher existed amongst all the noise of the crowd."
- "It was really good to see a bit of everything. The way he struck that rock was unreal and the little boys should be really proud of the way they handled themselves."
Again thank you to all who helped organise the demo and to Mulwaree High School for letting us be part of the event. We look forward to hopefully being part of the event again next year! Congratulations Mulwaree.
SENSEI JOE ROSES SEMINAR – FEBRUARY 17 2009
On February 17, Sensei Joe Roses visited the IOGKF Lambert dojo in Goulburn, New South Wales for a special junior session. It was aimed at students aged between 10 and 16. The visit was much anticipated, not only because it was the first time many participants had trained with a new instructor, but it was also the first time since 2006 that a guest instructor had visited the dojo for training.
Sensei Joe arrived around 5:00pm and most students arriving for the 5:30pm start commented that it was good to see Sensei Lambert being trained on senior Kata by the Australian joint chief Instructor.
At 5:30pm a large group of junior participants lined up to be trained by the visiting instructor. Sensei Joe started with a lengthy talk about how self defense is not only about Karate techniques, but being safe by telling people where you’re going, listening to instructions carefully and being your own person and not allowing yourself to be bullied. “Leadership is important. Be a leader, not a ship.
The session began with an explanation of etiquette in Goju ryu. Sensei Joe explained about seiza and respect when bowing.
He then began Junbi undo training, exposing the participants to a variety of different stretching techniques. Sensei Joe then took everyone through a series of energetic push up sets, again showing a variety of techniques and methods.
The guest instructor then dished out a dose of Kihon for all members, starting basic and building up into combination training. Sensei Joe gave small technical tips about footwork, hip and body movements for each different technique.
At the conclusion of the basic training, Sensei Joe commented he was very happy with everyone’s technique. All participants tried very hard and took a lot away from this part of the training.
Partner drills were next, with the aim of the students being able to get used to the presence of attacking techniques and also to be able to absorb the impact of a strong attack with a strong block or defensive movement.
Kata training was next on the agenda. Sensei Joe examined every student’s Kata and was very happy with their technique. He again gave technical tips about foot work and how to generate even more power in techniques.
Sensei Joe explained to the participants that there were endless applications to self defense from the Kata. Sensei Joe and Sensei Lambert then demonstrated Gekisai Dai Ichi Renzoku Bunkai (two man Kata). First it was done with full power, then slowed down and broken into sections so the participants could see the techniques of the Kata.
All participants also commented that they enjoyed the last section of the training, where Sensei Joe demonstrated self defense techniques on Sensei Lambert. Once this was completed, everyone bowed out and Sensei Lambert presented a gift to Sensei Roses for his time and teachings on the night.
Sensei Joe thanked everyone for their attendance and enthusiasm towards their training. He explained that if they keep training hard with Sensei Lambert that they all have the ability to become very strong and sharp Karate-ka. With that everybody’s enthusiasm was raised and all have become even more determined to succeed with Karate.
On behalf of the IOGKF Lambert Dojo, we’d all like to thank Sensei Joe Roses very much for coming to visit the dojo and we very much look forward to hosting him and other guest instructors in the near future.
Thank you very much!

Visit to Kokoro Dojo - Newcastle
On
Saturday, February 7, 2009 I visited Kokoro Dojo in Newcastle, New South
Wales, with the kind permission of Sensei Brad Brown and Sensei Chris
Larken.
I arrived around 9am for a 9:30am start. Driving up through the amazing scenery of the Hunter Valley and its many vineyards was really fantastic! Wine growing and produce, like Karate-do, has a lot of traditions dating back many centuries so I appreciated the views of the many yards flowing into the distance, in set patterns like Kata – it was very beautiful.
Arriving early gave me the time to catch up with my good friend Sensei Brad Brown and his lovely family, all of whom – as usual – welcomed me with open arms. We started at 9:30am and I appreciated the appearance from my other good friend and Australian joint Chief, Sensei Chris Larken.
We bowed in with 40 odd students ready to train and I started with a traditional Goju-ryu warm up, concentrating mainly on the technical aspects and breathing involved with the exercises we perform. I was very impressed with everybody’s enthusiasm; especially the young group of red pee-wees in the front line.
We then progressed onto some fitness and timing drills, starting in partners with one person lying on the ground, with the other completing jumping and turning drills in between their partners legs. We then moved onto some timing drills starting off with attacking and defensive moves, followed by defending and countering. All seemed to enjoy this training, even with the running thrown into it a bit later.
I then explained a little about elbow techniques to the class and took everyone through a basic combination drill, utilizing the five main waza used in Goju-ryu. From there I added a few applications, using some of the techniques we had just practiced, combined with take downs. It was good to see some partners really challenging each other with the training.
Kata was next on the agenda. We practiced Gekisai Dai Ichi and Gekisai Dai Ni all together, focusing on footwork and explanations of the techniques. The effort from everyone was very good and I was again impressed with the young junior grades.
I finished the session off with explanation of Kumite. I explained and demonstrated Iri Kumi 1, 2 and 3. It was great to see all students perfecting their technique and some challenging themselves against much larger and stronger opponents.
All in all I had a great time a Kokoro Dojo, I have visited there many times now and I always feel very welcome and respected. I received a lot of positive feedback from both Students and Parents about the session and everyone involved in the club has a very positive attitude to Karate-do training.
My thanks to Sensei Larken for taking time out of his busy schedule to come to the dojo and to Sensei Brad Brown and his team at Kokoro for allowing me to come and train once more – I appreciate it very much. I hope to host an instructor from Newcastle at my dojo in April for a Karate session.
I look forward to seeing all our Newcastle members at the Canberra Gasshuku on the 18th and 19th of April 2009!

2009 New
Year Greeting
Greeting from Higaonna Sensei (IOGKF Chief Instructor)
Happy
New Year!
When I look back on the year, 2008, I reflect on many things. I think of the Okinawa Budosai, which was a great success. I would like to thank all of our members for your support. The success of the Budosai created a positive impact not only on karate society, but also on Okinawan society in general. I think of Shuichi Aragaki Sensei’s wife, who passed away at the end of last year. I would like to send my sincere condolences to Aragaki Sensei and his family. I also think of 25th, when I became 70 years old. I received many messages, card and flowers from our members around the world. I thank all of you for your thoughtfulness.
The economic crisis which started in the USA last year is spreading worldwide, and this year will be an even more difficult year economically. There was a terrorist attack in India. In Palestine, a lot of innocent children and people were killed in an attack. There are a lot of conflicts and wars; terrorism between races, nations and religions, still exist in this world. However, we as traditional martial artists have to strive to reach an inner peace through our daily training and meditation. We must treat others with respect, avoid conflict and help people in need in order to create a better and more peaceful society. I wish all of our members and their families good health and prosperity for 2009.
Morio Higaonna
IOGKF Chief Instructor
Greeting from Yamashiro Sensei (IOGKF Chairman)
Happy
New Year!
Last year’s Okinawa Budosai was a great success. I would like to thank all participants. I received many positive comments from many Okinawan karate masters from other styles about how they were very impressed by the commitment of our members toward traditional karate, by the high level of performance at the masters’ demonstration, and by the high level of leadership of Morio Higaonna Sensei.
Recently, the value of traditional karate has been recognized by society worldwide. I believe, that is because people have started to realize the importance of the harmony between the “body and technique” (something visible) and the “spirit and mind” (something invisible). Now is a good opportunity for us (traditional karate practitioners) to spread the art.
Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate was passed down from Chojun Miyagi Sensei to An’ichi Miyagi Sensei and to Morio Higaonna Sensei. We, as members of IOGKF, have to take the responsibility of passing this great intangible culture on to our next generation.
I wish all our members and their families the best in 2009.
Katsuya Yamashiro
IOGKF Chairman
End of Year Message
2009 is nearly upon us and with that in mind it is a good time to
reflect on what has been and set goals for what is yet to come.
This year has been a big year, with Karate, for all involved with the
Dojo. For many of you it has seen the start of your Martial arts training.
For others it has been a return to the past and for our many guests
from other styles, an insight into a different world.
For myself it has been a very big year. From intense training in Goulburn,
to an extended stay in Okinawa and training at Higaonna Dojo, attending
and demonstrating at the World Budosai, acquiring my next grade and
take charge of my father's dojo as head instructor.
The support I have received from you all during everything mentioned
has been incredible and I deeply thank you all for that.
The standard of the members lifts from week to week and I am impressed
with the attitude displayed by all to training.
Our goal for next year is to increase our membership to our set number
by 2009. Along with this the training will also lift, so all members
can get the most of Karate. But everyone must remember that you only
get out of Karate what you put into it. If you want to be good, you
must training hard.
The Dojo will also receive an organisation overhaul, a new executive
structure which will be announced sometime in the New year.
I would also like to thank everyone who has worked on the Dojo promotional
team this year for their efforts, along with Sensei Helmut Leitner for
running our website and assisting with my grading participation.
I would like to pay an extra special thank you to my teacher, Higaonna
Morio Sensei, for his guidance, wisdom, challenging our spirits at training
and most of all, for showing us the example of what a human being should
be like.
Let us all try even harder this coming year to challenge ourselves and
reach the essence of Goju-ryu Karate-do and to promote the martial arts
as the traditional and cultural treasure that it is.
I look forward to seeing everyone in 2009 and sharing your enthusiasm
in Karate.
Best regards to all and your families for a safe and happy 2009!
